The Town Chronicle - Introduction
The town chronicle is an important document which enables persons interested in history to get a survey about the basic events of the town and eventually the fast orientation before the visit to the town archives.
Since 1922 when the bill ordering the chronicle keeping in every village was passed,in Prachatice the chronicle was kept by the Mayor of the town Prachatice Karel Pechtl. Considering the Mayor`s nationality it was written in German. In 1935 after the elections the control of the town changed hands and at that time Mayor Otto Chadraba asked Mr.Bohumil Jan Idlbek to take up the keeping of the town chronicle.Mr.Idlbek accepted this offer and with the exception of the period 1939 - 1945 he was keeping the town chronicle till the half-year of 1970 when he resigned from this function with the letter to the Council of the Municipal National Committee from June 8.
The year 1968 was described by Mr Idbek yet,the following two years were described by Mr.Vladimír Vošahlík. For the present the period 1971 - 1979 hasn`t been compiled yet, since 1980 it was Mgr.Pavel Fencl that worked as a town chronicler and that provided ten year`s records altogether.Considering the absence of a chronicler the period 1990 - 1996 will be put down by so called bridging record.
Since 1997 the post of the chronicler has been held by Mgr.Milada Fenclová.Keeping the chronicle doesn`t mean only to provide so called year`s record, but to compile the document annexes, too.Together with the chronicle we also keep collections (e.g. postcards, posters, publications about the town),Among others old telephones directories and railway time-tables are available, too.
In the District Archives there are these volumes of the Prachatice chronicle available:
| 1st volume, | 1922 - 1938 till the occupation | |
| 2nd volume, | 1945-1951 | |
| 3rd volume, | 1952-1959 | |
| 4th volume, | 1960-1962 | |
| 5th volume, | 1962-1967 |
The records since 1968 (with the exception of 1971 - 1979) are available at the chronicler and since 1997 the recor is also in a digital form which is introduced on our web pages.
